Tolerance vs. Pseudo Tolerance which is a fabrication of the real thing.
Definition of Tolerance
1. A fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, beliefs, practices, racial or ethnic origins, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry. 2. A fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions, beliefs, and practices that
differ from one's own.
To say another way, tolerance of another is not to say we share their same believes or lifestyles, but that we disagree, have our own viewpoints while free to express them as well, just as you are free to your own practices and beliefs while not agreeing with another.
The problem we run into though is what really is, and not much more than, pseudo tolerance or an imitation of the real virtue and heart of the matter. First of all, lets be clear in that to be tolerant one has to make a judgment call, and we all make judgments all the time. Genuine tolerance will say, and to reiterate the previously mentioned, I don't share your beliefs but you are free to your viewpoints, however, I don't share these. This is tolerance by definition. The modern day tolerance protests, if you don't agree with us, our lifestyles, our believes, and non-conventional marriage of homosexuality and/or our rights to do and live as we so please, you are a bigot and judgmental. Modern day tolerance says, I have the right to terminate my baby's life if that life is an inconvenience to me. It says, "I can do as I damn-well choose" even though the baby's dad has no right or say in the matter. Modern day tolerance says, "It's my right, my choice" when the baby's doctor chooses not to kill your baby but give it life instead. Modern day tolerance says, you are a judgmental, a bigot, and hypocritical just because another does not share their views and practices. Pseudo Tolerance says of another who simply does not share their viewpoints, you are intolerant and we will protest you and those like you who don't tolerate us, while becoming the most intolerant of all of society.
So you see, in the process of claiming “intolerance” with those who do not share their viewpoints, these radical and often violent voices demanding their rights, demanding tolerance while lashing out at all who do not agree with or share their views, have become the most intolerant members of society. They have become the most intolerant even to the point of legislation on the books forbidding – by law, our pastors, religious teachers, and christian university professors at large to as much as express their disagreements with these most intolerant of all, without breaking the law while fearing arrest or worse.
We live in a time of relativism that essentially and in practice says: “Everything is right some of the time and nothing is right all of the time.” In other words, when 911 happened the proponents of relativism would look at the towers coming down and thousands of innocent lives lost at the hands of radical Islam terrorists while asked, how do you view such an evil? They would tell you it's all relative. It's all how you view this moment in time. It's neither good nor evil, it's all relative.
So neither right nor wrong exists with relativism, however, Jesus said: “You (believer Christians) are the salt of the earth, but if you loose your saltiness you become good for nothing and will be trampled under foot (Math. 5:13).”
You, the believer, are also said to be “the light of the world,” but if you compromise The Truth found in “The Message of The Gospel of Christ,” and as such were the religious leaders of the day who sought to silence and kill Jesus did, you allow yourself to become preyed upon while sharing in their viewpoints. Further yet, you may even be supporting their practices without even realizing it, as to take a light view of what Christianity stands for - yes STANDS for, is to compromise and your tolerance becomes a "shared" viewpoint.
But radical intolerance is no tolerance at all, and goes to great extremes to silence those who are genuinely tolerant (by definition) of other viewpoints that differ from their own. If you suppress The Gospel of Christ in the process if thinking yourself tolerant, in so doing you not only loose your saltiness and value but your light will be diminished as your own value becomes, just as Jesus said: Good for nothing !
Tolerance or, Pseudo Tolerance; Are you the real thing or self-serving intolerant? Are you tolerant to the point of being ready and able to hold a discussion of reason for the sake of Truth, or are you intolerant to the point of violence and extremes intending to silence those who disagree with you?
